Chapter Thirteen

Sam

Finding out that Dakota lied to me wasn’t as big of a blow to my ego as it could have been. I didn’t take it personally. Judging by her mysterious and secretive nature, it didn’t really surprise me at all. What did surprise me though, was the way she was talking to me now. It was like she was showing interest in me. But why? We were nothing alike.

“She seems nice,” Dakota said of Vanessa. “Did you meet her here at school? Or—”

“We don’t really need to make small talk,” I interrupted her. “We can just do the assignment.”

I really wasn’t interested in what she had to say. When I saw her in my class today, I came over so I could give her a piece of my mind, and that was it. Once I realized partner-picking time was up, I just stayed because there was no point in wandering around and looking for someone else. She could do her assignment, I could do mine, and that would be the end of us seeing each other.

I saw her look down at the assignment sheet again, and then back to her own notebook. She wrote a few things down, but I didn’t know what they were. “How would you want your pay allotted?” she asked. “Would you want to get paid in a lump sum, or over a period of time?”

“If I had to pick, I’d choose the second option,” I said. “Getting paid over a period of time makes more sense.”

“What about a guard against spending?” she asked. “Would you like a block or something in place that would prevent you from making an exorbitant purchase or withdrawal?”

Hmm… interesting question. If a million dollars dropped into my bank account overnight, would I go on a spending spree? That was a no-brainer.

“Let’s go with yes,” I said. “Block it.”

“Would you want to get insurance on the money?”

“Umm… sure.”

“Would you want to have your contract locked in a fireproof safe? You know—just in case?”

“Alright.”

“Do you carry an umbrella around with you at all times?”

“Uhh…” I raised an eyebrow. “What?”

Dakota chuckled. “Based on what you’ve said to me, it looks like every decision you make is out of concern that you’re doing the right thing. It’s practical, sure. But boring.”

Well, I don’t know how she could sit there and call me boring. Wasn’t she the one that wanted to be a finance manager? Wasn’t she the one all dressed in black with a plain leather jacket? Dakota was sitting there looking at a future Broadway star who was wearing a trendy fall sweater, skinny jeans, and awesome fold-over boots. She was looking at a girl with big, looped earrings, a chunky necklace, and black and orange fingernails. She was looking at the girl that pulled her up on a stage in a karaoke bar to sing a song by Katy freakin’ Perry.

I did make-believe for a living, and she was saying I was the boring one? Me?

“So, what are you trying to suggest?” I asked.
